Lisette was blinded by hair falling across her
face, and all she could see of her captors was a dark-haired man
reaching out for her reins. She slashed at him with her riding crop, but
the man’s powerful arm circled her waist and pulled her from the horse.
Certain her ribs would break from his crushing hold, Lisette wiggled
until she finally felt herself drop to the ground. Two powerful hands
gripped her shoulders, and Lisette stared blankly at his lace cravat
until the pressure of his finger under her chin tipped her head up, and
she saw his magnificent eyes. It was her Baron.
Girard brushed the auburn hair from the woman’s
face and couldn’t believe what he had found. “Lisette?”
“Oui!” She threw herself into his arms. He had
come to her rescue after all.
Relief was short-lived when she realized Girard
wasn’t returning the embrace. Instead, he pushed her away and held her
at arm’s length. “Did you come to watch your father break the treaty?”
The Baron laughed sardonically. “It seems the Duc doesn’t know I’m
holding the spoils before the battle
has even begun. The odds are even now that
the lady has decided to join us.” |
